Sound on Disc :: essays research papers

Sound-On-Disc: From Inception ‘til Death From the Kinetophone to the Vitaphone, the sound-on-disc format dominated the pioneering stage of sound in movies. For the first time ever, people were able to hear sound synchronized with the images on the screen, and the revolution had begun-the talkies were here to stay. It was the sound-on-disc format that helped create many of Hollywood’s â€Å"talkie† classics, including The Jazz Singer and The Singing Fool. However, another format, sound-on-film, would soon take reign of the talking motion picture movement, as the audience and the exhibitors started to become more demanding as technology was slowly improving. Sound-on-disc was simply beleaguered with too many technical and economic problems to continue to stay relevant. Thus, the competing sound-on-film format eventually became widely-accepted in the motion picture industry and is used even to this day.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  There were many different technologies in the beginning of the 20th Century that were able to incorporate sound with film, including the Chronophone and the Cameraphone. However, the most influential film-phonograph combination in terms of the impact on the developments in the 1920s was Thomas Edison’s Kinetophone, which featured an automatic synchronizing system (Gomery, 27). Numerous identical gears linked the phonograph and projector to cause both machines, if manually operated, to move at the same rate. He also created an adjustment dial to correct synchronization problems. The Kinetophone was indeed advanced for its time.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  On February 19, 1913, the Kinetophone premiered at the Colonial, a vaudeville theatre on Broadway. The film opened with a lecturer who proceeded to explain the system. He also smashed a plate, played the violin and piano, and had a dog bark-all of which demonstrated the power of Edison’s technology (28). A minstrel act followed, and the film eventually ended with the chorus of the â€Å"Star Spangled Banner.† It was a huge hit, and the audience gave the film a 15 minute standing ovation.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Despite it’s successful opening night, the promise of the Kinetophone never materialized. During the second week of its New York Presentation, the audience booed the Kinetophone, as the synchronization was off by as much as 10 to 12 seconds due to an inexperienced projectionist. There were also other problems that plagued it. The phonograph emitted a â€Å"harsh, metallic sound†, and its volume was never sufficient to fill a large vaudeville theatre (29). Eventually, by 1915, all operations of Edison’s Kinetophone had ceased. Edison’s failure marked the end of the pioneering phase of the phonograph- based sound pictures.

Uncertainty And Imperfect Information On Entrepreneurship

Uncertainty and Imperfect information in entrepreneurship are two important concepts that should be considered in the role of entrepreneurs. According to (Klir, 1999) uncertainty has many methods and dimensions and can include concepts such as vagueness, disagreement and conflict, imprecision and non-specificity The term ‘uncertainty’ can be defined broadly as â€Å"any deviation from the unachievable ideal of completely deterministic knowledge of the relevant system† (Walker, 2003). Uncertainty could mean unpredictability, doubt or fear of the unknown. It has to do with the risk entrepreneurs take in business. Imperfect information on the other hand means lack of adequate information before embarking on the business. It can also be viewed as incomplete collection of facts or flawed communication. These two concepts play vital roles in businesses and if not carefully considered and handled, they can have adverse effects on businesses. Who Are Entrepreneurs? An entrepreneur is a person who creates new business, taking risks in accomplishing the objectives which they intend to make profits and growth by recognising vital opportunities (Burdus, 2010). They are individuals who innovate, recognise business opportunities, gather and co-ordinate new blends of resources {i.e. production functions) in other to extract the most profits from their innovations in an uncertain environment (Rapheal Amit, 1993) Entrepreneurs are private business owners. Comparing Machiavelli And The Prince - 902 Words

Dave Licause European History Machiavelli and the Prince Machiavelli is one of the greatest and most widely recognized humanist authors. Machiavelli received a classic middle class renaissance humanist education. The Prince most apparent departure from the humanist narrative is the separation of politics and ethics. Machiavelli, in the Prince, creates the first modern political treatise. Machiavelli had an interest to practically deal with the creation of a new government in Florence by the Medici’s, following the fall of the Florentine republic. Machiavelli saw the need for a unified Italy, one that could resist the encroachment of other empires onto Italian soil. Machiavelli also rooted his treatise in concrete examples from recent†¦show more content†¦The intense political pressures of the time led to widespread violence, corruption, and strife. Machiavelli lived through multiple French invasions of Italy, and was intimately involved in Florentine political life. He served as a chancello r in the Florentine government from 1497 to 1512. He served diplomatic missions where he became involved with other political leaders of the time. However, in 1512 the Medici’s rose to power, ending the republic and Machiavelli’s political career. The Prince was directly influenced by Machiavelli’s desire to reconcile with the Medici to once again enter the Florentine political sphere. With The Prince, Machiavelli created a new, modern political treatise. He made sure to differentiate his ideas from earlier Humanist political works. He mainly did so through his use of concrete, contemporary examples as the root of his argument. This was a less theoretical approach than political theories before it. Modernist intellectuals used concepts of ideal states to justify political actions, but Machiavelli argued it was through the shrewdness of its leader that a nation state could survive. The most prominent example that Machiavelli uses is Caesar Borgia. He had been involved with Louis VII of France who arranged for Borgia’s rise to power in Rome. He described Borgia, despite losing his control of Rome, as having, â€Å"taken

Self-assurance In our life, there are two words between you and your success. In addition I am sure you will accept knowledge and experience more than others. We will write a custom essay sample on Self-confidence: Confidence and Self-assurance or any similar topic only for you Order Now In this essay I am going to define these two words which called self-assurance, which basis of the successful person. Everybody have abilities and decisions also have potentials, but all of this needs confidence to be prominent. In my assay I will discuss about concept of self-assurance, I will compare between it and vanity, and the positive effects of it†¦ For that reason we need to compare between them, with example from reality. First one _ self-assurance _ comes from several factors which are: repeat successes, has the ability to override the difficulties and embarrassing situations and wisdom in dealing. In addition self-assurance programmed the person to accept the result whatever. For that, I am like most people’s which think it is something positive. On another hand, the vanity means feeling of greatness and dust perfection. So, the different between them is the self-assurance is estimate of possibilities available. But, the second is loss or abuse of this estimate. For example: the vanity person doesn’t listen to others except him and he always talking about himself. He cannot believe that he may makes mistakes. He believes that he can be in the right place rather than others. But, the achievements are talking about the confident person. Therefore, the one of the greatest common mistakes is to say that vanity is the same self-confidence or even confuse them. That is because vanity is demolition agent rights while confidence flying the rights. he very unfortunate to say that, the self-assurance can be grow to the point that see to its owner – in him self- he has ability on everything . Then, here turning to vanity. So, we can say there is one hair between self-assurance and vanity. So, the more human self-confidence whenever intensified that hair and approached the drop! In my opinion we ca n say the self-assurance is something such as motivation on the person to highlights of his abilities, decisions and potentials. Also, self-assurance almost means the esteem of self, and faith of this, can be reached this self to the success. Because of the person respect himself so, the others will respect him. Less an example of that, When I was in elementary school. I read in one publication in my school which was published weekly contest held for the speech. I was very eager to participate in the contest so I read many articles in order to gain a range of skills to enable me to participate in the competition and won in it . Therefore, I went to the teacher Responsible for the competition to ask him to add my name to the list of participants in the competition but he refuse to add my name. He said that my age didn’t allowed me to join the competition. But I was confident of my ability to participate in the contest. Finally, because of my insistence, my teacher agreed to join with the participants in the competition. And already I participated in the competition and managed to win in it within creative students. Finally ,self-confidence is gaining and evolve not generate self-confidence with when it appears to the human life, those people who know you they are confidence and the can control of the concern, and have no difficulties in dealing and coping at any time or in any place are people who have gained self-confidence.
